DANCE AT BRONXDALE
Dance has a unique home in New York City, as being known as the capital of dance in the world. The Bronx also has a unique place in dance history, as it is the birthplace of Hip-Hop, neighbor to the birthplace of Jazz, and home to many current day dance legends. In this dance class at Bronxdale High School, we will learn dances from different cultures through exploring their purpose, cultural significance and global influences. We will also learn about the accompanying music, the people from which the dance originated, and many chances to present our knowledge to the community. The cultures we will be studying include traditional West African, European Folk dances, Latin dances, Afro-Caribbean, and Popular American dances from the 1860s-early 2000s. These dances will be learned through the four cornerstones of dance: Dancing and performing, Creating and Composing, Knowing History, Culture, and Context, and Analyzing and Critiquing.
